I totally agree that some fanfictions can be amazing. Also the fact that it often requires to know the characters is kind of the point? Like I read fanfictions BECAUSE I want more content for the fandom I'm reading the stories in. I don't need every fanfiction story to describe how the characters I already know look like, that would be boring too. Same with the emotional connection. Yes its already there and the fanfic can build on cannon, but it's not really nessecary to newly establish that. What's important is that the story builds on the cannon and goes from there in a way that feels consistent but is also interesting in new ways

came back to this video after having a proshipper mocking me for not liking underage stuff because its a trigger of mine. wrote a blog post about it but i feel like this video is more eloquent than i could ever be. i feel like there's more to say about this topic, transgressive fiction is a big interest of mine but it sucks having people mocking me for having triggers. i have to remember that these people are so terminally online that they base their entire personality about it and care little about how others feel. they don't even care about reality, they don't even care about fandom, they just care about themselves.

I've noticed this phenomena recently. My 3yo kiddo has been watching some Disney movies, and I could help but notice that the ones that were "diverse" seemed like they had less polish. Or rather, had fundamental flaws and high polish. I have been calling it a sort of Malicious Compliance. It really feels like someone asked some C suite executives to make diverse entertainment and now they're deliberately doing a poor job.

I feel like Divergent would have worked better if you just had Dauntless as a special faction the strongest people can join, and everyone else is just an ordinary person. Tris works her ass off to get into Dauntless and then discovers it's a horror show, and it could be a commentary on how kids are sold a lie about the military.

I also wanna add that sometimes when you do stuff unironically..... you do it 'better'. Not often, but I know for example that Uhm Actually the show takes the pedanticness of nerd culture without the sexism, arrogance and meanness that that type of nerd usually has. If contestants on Uhm Actually don't know any of the answers, that's fine. Whereas normally if this stuff is done unironically, not knowing stuff would make you a loser. Here it doesn't. I feel like RuPaul does something similar by saying 'Yes, we're trash TV. But we're GAY trash TV.' because the best reality TV from before RuPaul was "Playing it Straight" which was extremely homophobic. RuPaul's Drag Race because went "Íf everyone's gonna mock the gays, then let them do it on our terms! By letting us mock the gays first!" HOWEVER, this of course still leads to a lot of problems. The show is mainly meant for the white male gays, not for anyone else in the LGBT community. It doesn't really feel like a show for them. That's where the main problems of the show come from. It was a step up in gay representation (by reclaiming gay stereotypes and stealing the narrative from the straights) but it didn't do anything for the rest of the LGBT community or other issues such as white male homosexual sexism, racism etc. Thereby.... well..... very much being a reflection of "discrimination within a community." I'm really yapping lol but yeah, just stuff to think about. Beautifull analysis as always btw! <3

Fics for me are about connecting to the characters who mean the most to me and connecting to myself by association. It's affirming and it's devatating and it's stupid. A little late here but I think of it as an exploration of superhero tropes. Penny is actually the only real hero and she dies not for the narrative but to show how the superhero genera would run over any normal person in the way, especially a truly good person. The hatred between hammer and horrible is definitely inflamed by the "love triangle" but even if penny weren't there horrible would have tried kill hammer to get into the evil league of evil. Horrible is a evil "nice guy" only because he feels for one last person (just as hammer is actually a bad guy because he doesn't). In the end Billy becomes hammer as the last shred of his attachment to the world dies. More like Dr Manhattan loosing his humanity when Silk Specter leaves him, Billy has no redemption possible with Penny dead.

When High Guardian Spice was announced, I thought it looked bad, but not for any diversity reasons, but because an anime network was making a western cartoon. if it had been announced for cartoon network I would never have thought of it again. And then it came out and I watched it out of morbid curiosity... it was fine. I think it's really funny how you called the bully girl intentionally unlikeable cause man I liked her the best, she rules.

Giving this a rewatch because I remembered the section on more general fanon had a few character name-related headcanons and I need your strength and wisdom right now. Ace Attorney Investigations 2 just got an official translation after YEARS of the fandub being accepted as basically canon and all of us getting used to, in particular, the character names down to little details of equivalents for how specific characters would address each other in the Japanese...and I like a few of the new "official" names but some of the others I am speedrunning the five stages of grief. But I don't want to be That Guy from all these stories about horrible volatile pushy/reductive "fanon" sects so i am just. Taking deep breaths. Eustace Winner isn't real, he can't hurt me. Idk. Idk.

The theory that Johnlock was canon and the writers were just putting an insane amount of effort, skill, and clues into the story reminds me of Toby Fox. The only difference is that Toby Fox is passionate about the games he creates, makes compelling stories that fans love, doesn’t queerbait, and can actually write women. TL;DR? Toby Fox has cared more about Undertale and Deltarune for over a decade than the creators of Sherlock did in a handful of years. I hope at least some Johnlock fans found Toby’s work, because it’s exactly what they dreamed of- and something the show couldn’t hold a candle to.

I know nothing about the game issue, but from my own work experience, I 100% buy that they didn't have what they needed to make the game. You wouldn't believe how many times stuff got held up bc somebody in the field didn't think your question was worth their time. Then, when they finally answer bc they want their drawings, they act like you should be able to snap your fingers and have it done that day. "No, sorry. My schedule was free when I first asked my questions. Now I have a full page of drawings on my schedule. I'll do my best to get it to you this week, but I'm not making any promises."

You touched on it and the homestuck cosplayers were annoying BUT cosplay was different at the time and most cosplayers were obnoxious and/or over excited, the true problem was the lack of boundaries, for some reason Homestuck cosplayers were more often then not extremely bad about touching people, invading personal space, and lots of "glomping"
